Okapi

This painting is from a photo of a young Okapi at the San Diego Zoo.  Although the Okapi bears striped markings reminiscent of the zebra, it is the only living close relative of the giraffe.  Like the giraffe, it has a long tongue (15 inches).  Native only to the Ituri Rainforests situated in the north east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Africa, the Okapi was known only to the local people until 1901.
